VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser)
VCSEL is a type of semiconductor laser diode with laser beam emission perpendicular from the top surface, contrary to conventional edge-emitting semiconductor lasers which emit from surfaces formed by cleaving the individual chip out of a wafer. VCSELs are used in variety of products, including fiber optic communications, laser printers, automotive LiDAR systems, smart phones for facial recognition, Biometric authentication.
The growth in popularity of smart phones has driven increased demand for compound semiconductor- based RF communication devices. The next generation of technology, 5G, targets high data rate, reduced latency, energy saving, cost reduction, higher system capacity, and massive device connectivity.
